Handprinted Plant Totes by Nida

$18.00

These handprinted totes are made here in Des Moines by Nida Handcrafts, with Sile cloth fabric originating from Turkey. They feature two designs crafted and printed by Nida.

More about Nida and the cloth from Nida herself:
Hi everyone, my name is Nida and I grew up in Sile, a cozy little town outside of Istanbul, Turkey. Sile is famous for its special Sile cloth. Sile is a uniquely wrinkled, natural lightweight cotton fabric, which has been produced with the same handmade artisan method for hundreds of years.

The fabric is first women on a hand loom with cotton threads which are boiled in water with flour. It's then soaked in a lime solution, washed in the salt water from the Black Sea, then dried in the sun on the sandy Sile beaches. This leaves the fabric slightly crinkled and very soft.

Elderly women of Sile pass their warm summer days sitting in front of their quaint houses, chatting with each other and perfecting their handcrafted textiles. I touched my first Sile textiles when I was a little girl living with my grandma, where I started doing cross-stitch with her and her friends.

I love sourcing these special fabrics to create the unique works you see in my shop. I feel spiritually satisfied to support these artisans, by integrating their fabrics into my designs, which allows them to sustain and grow their heritage businesses.
